The Instructional Division focuses on developing baseball skills and fundamentals, and fostering a love for the game, with less emphasis on wins and losses. This division is recommended for 5- and 6-year-olds, based on the Cal Ripken age determination chart (linked above). Players in this division will learn to hit off a tee, and later in the season may hit off coach-pitch. Player commitment is one weekday (varies based on coach availability) and Sundays during the season, which runs from mid-April until the end of the school year. Birth dates from May 1, 2016 through April 30, 2018 should register in this division.
The Rookie Division is recommended for 7- and 8-year-olds, based on the Cal Ripken age determination chart (linked above). This division begins as a coach-pitch league where outs and strikeouts are recorded. We do not keep score. Later in the season, we may introduce kid-pitch with limits on scoring and no stolen bases. Scores and standings are tracked, and a playoff is held at the end of the season. Birth dates from May 1, 2015 through April 30, 2017 should register in this division.
The Minors Division continues to focus on developing baseball skills and fundamentals, but we begin to record outs, keep score, and introduce some basic baseball strategies. This Division is recommended for 9- and 10-year-olds, based on the Cal Ripken age determination chart (linked above). Play in these divisions continues to focus on developing fundamentals, with an introduction to more complex baseball strategies and a higher level of competition. This is a kid-pitch league with limits on scoring and no stolen bases. Scores and standings are tracked, and a playoff is held at the end of the season. Birth dates from May 1, 2013 through April 30, 2015 should register in this division.
The Majors Division is most experienced level of Cal Ripken Baseball, recommended for 11- and 12-year-old players. Cal Ripken Baseball is played under the Official Baseball Rules, but implements some special (local) rules as necessary for the development and welfare of this age group. This division features a 50' pitching distance and 70' base paths, thus allowing players to learn and experience the rules of the game before moving to the bigger diamond at 13. Majors offers the very best players a chance to be selected to represent the town over the summer. There is a tournament trail from District competition through the World Series in Branson, MO at Ballparks of America featuring 8 International Champions. Birth dates from May 1, 2011 through April 30, 2013 should register in this division.
The Bambino Division is for developmentally and physically challenged youth of all ages, helping them to enjoy the full benefits of Babe Ruth participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. This program replaces Challenger. Registration for this division is open to all ages.
